How Much To Upgrade A Boiler?……………?

Your boiler is on the slippery slope now that condensing boilers are law, manufacturers will not keep making parts for boilers that are no longer sold, though some parts will be available for a good while yet because manufacturers buy things like gas valves and the gas valve manufacturers will want to make the sales as long as possible. If you upgrade, there are a few things to watch for, and all influence the cost, I can see a few on here have been short changed. What you require is a conversion, from a vented, regular system to a sealed system, you do this using a combination boiler, (you can keep a regular sytem with a cylinder, but the cylinder should be changed and this makes costs more), The best boilers currently are Worcester Bosch and Vaillant, they are also the most expensive, WB give all boilers installed by an accredited installer a 5 years guarantee, thermostatic radiator valves must be installed to sleeping areas by law, but it is a good idea to have trv’s on all radiators except one, this should be the one in the same room as the room thermostat (room thermostat is required by law), the system should be power flushed on completion to remove all installation debris, the most harmful thing to an aluminium heat cell (the heater in the boiler, this is commonly aluminium in modern boilers), is iron oxide and magnetite, to prevent this, a Magnaclean or Boiler Buddy should be installed, these remove the harmful particles on an ongoing basis. The ph level (alkaline/acidity) of the water is also critical, it should be less than ph 8, manufacturers insist on this for the guarantee, (I guarantee none of the answerers here had this told to them, let alone proved to them), another test is the TDS (total dissolved solids), this is the purity of the water, and should be no more than 10% different than the tap water. If you are going down the replacement route, use an installer who is approved or accredited by the company who’s boiler they are installing, and, ensure that they service the boilers they install (many don’t). The cost should be in the region of £2500 – £3000, unless British Gas, then £4000 to £5000. Good luck.

Pilot problems are easy to repair. the worst it can be is a new gas valve. call in a gas engineer and save yourself a lot of money compared compared to an upgrade.

For the gas man to fix $100-$200. For a new boiler close to $2000 depending on the efficiency of the new boiler. For more on efficiency or boilers go to http://www.hvac-for-beginners.com

    about a grand

The old Glowworm Boilers seem to last years, they are solid.
Maybe it would be a cheaper investment to have your boiler serviced.and checked, It sounds like a blocked pilot jet, the worst it could be is the gas valve, they would cost about £110 plus fitting.
The problem with combi’s, is that your radiators and pipes might not take the extra pressure needed for operating the combi, then it’s more money for upgrading your heating system
As I said, try the service option first,

  • SUE G online:

i had a new combi boiler fitted 6 weeks ago and it cost £1000 for the boiler and £600 labour, well worth it though, we can now run bath after bath if we want to , and they are supposed to be cheaper to run.

I paid 1400 pounds for boiler and installation but quotes ranged from 1400 to 3000. I got a Bosch bioler so you could probably get one cheaper, maybe a 1000 would be best price possible for supply and instillation. Get a friend of a friend or failing that shop around for the best quote, it’s worth the time and effort.
